AceShowbiz - At the 2024 Governors Awards, John Mulaney revealed he had filmed a self-tape audition for The Bride, directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal. During his opening monologue, Mulaney addressed the audience, humorously acknowledging his reputation as a stand-up comedian while assuring them he was also involved in film projects. He then shared an email from his agents, requesting a self-tape for the role of "Young Cop" in an untitled project helmed by Gyllenhaal. This project has since been confirmed as The Bride.
However, when asked by ScreenRant if she had received Mulaney's audition tape, Gyllenhaal responded, "No, I didn't," and expressed interest in seeing it should he decide to send it her way now. This revelation sparked curiosity about the impact of his audition on the film's casting process.
Interestingly, Gyllenhaal mentioned that after watching Mulaney's comedic performance at the awards, she was inspired to name the previously unnamed "Young Cop" character Officer Goodman. Although Mulaney auditioned for the role, the part ultimately went to Louis Cancelmi, known for his work on Sorry, Baby. The film's star, Jessie Buckley, praised Cancelmi’s performance, describing him as “brilliant.”
This casting choice highlights how The Bride continues to evolve creatively, even as it draws attention for its unique approach and talented ensemble. Fans of both Gyllenhaal and Mulaney remain eager to see how the project unfolds and whether Mulaney’s tape will eventually surface.
For now, Maggie Gyllenhaal awaits that elusive audition tape, adding an intriguing footnote to the film’s development story as production moves forward.
