Remembered as Back to the Future's Principal Strickland and Top Gun's Stinger, veteran character actor James Tolkan has died at 94.

AceShowbiz - James Tolkan, the veteran character actor famously known for his roles in the Back to the Future trilogy and Top Gun, has passed away at the age of 94.

A family spokesperson confirmed that Tolkan died on Thursday in Saranac Lake, New York. His career spanned decades, and he was widely recognized for his portrayal of tough, no-nonsense characters.

Among his most memorable performances was the role of Mr. Strickland, the strict and intimidating principal at Hill Valley High School, in the Back to the Future series. He appeared in the original 1985 film as well as its 1989 sequel, returning as Strickland’s grandfather in the 1990 third installment. Fans often approached him to be playfully reprimanded as a “slacker,” a catchphrase associated with his character.

In the 1986 hit Top Gun, Tolkan took on the role of Tom “Stinger” Jardian, the stern commanding officer who reprimands Tom Cruise’s character, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, for his reckless behavior. His commanding presence made the role particularly memorable.

Before these iconic roles, Tolkan demonstrated his versatility with diverse characters. He portrayed both Napoleon and his doppelgänger in Woody Allen's 1975 film Love and Death. In 1990’s Dick Tracy, he played the crooked accountant known as Numbers, working under Al Pacino’s villainous Big Boy Caprice. His extensive filmography also includes appearances in Sidney Lumet’s films such as Serpico (1973), Prince of the City (1981), and Family Business (1989).

Tolkan’s television work was equally impressive. He appeared in multiple episodes of NBC's Remington Steele as insurance investigator Norman Keyes and played various roles in 21 episodes of A&E's A Nero Wolfe Mystery, even directing some episodes. He also guest-starred on popular shows like Miami Vice, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, The Wonder Years, and Leverage.

Born James Stewart Tolkan on June 20, 1931, in Calumet, Michigan, he grew up moving through Chicago and Tucson, Arizona, where he graduated from Amphitheater High School in 1949. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he studied acting at Coe College, the University of Iowa, and later in New York at The Actors Studio under Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg.

Tolkan made his onscreen debut in 1960 on an episode of ABC's Naked City. On Broadway, he replaced Robert Duvall in the role of Harry Roat in the original production of Wait Until Dark in 1966. He also appeared in the original 1984-85 Broadway production of David Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross as salesman Dave Moss, a role later portrayed by Ed Harris in the 1992 film adaptation.

His film credits further include The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973), The Amityville Horror (1979), Wolfen (1981), WarGames (1983), Masters of the Universe (1987), True Blood (1989), and Opportunity Knocks (1990).

Tolkan’s wife, Parmelee, whom he met while working on the 1971 off-Broadway play Pinkville, survives him. Parmelee worked as a costumes and scenery painter at the American Place Theater. They married that same year in Lake Placid.

In remembrance of Tolkan, donations can be made to local animal shelters, rescue organizations, or Humane Society chapters, honoring his legacy in a meaningful way.
