AceShowbiz - A Cook County jury recently ruled in favor of Chance The Rapper after a high-profile legal dispute with his former manager, Pat "The Manager" Corcoran. The verdict came after a two-week trial and addressed claims involving unpaid wages and fiduciary breaches.
On March 20, the jury swiftly returned a decision supporting the Chicago rapper, who had been sued for over $3 million by Corcoran. The lawsuit stemmed from Corcoran’s 2020 claim that he was owed a post-termination settlement following his dismissal by Chance The Rapper in 2019. However, Corcoran failed to provide evidence of any formal agreement, which led the jury to reject his case.
In addition to dismissing Corcoran’s claims, the jury sided with Chance The Rapper on his $1 million countersuit. This countersuit alleged that Corcoran breached his fiduciary responsibilities and exploited the artist’s brand for personal benefit. Despite ruling in favor of Chance The Rapper, the jury awarded him only $35 in damages.
Moreover, the jury recommended that Corcoran relinquish control of the domain ChanceRaps.com, which had been utilized to sell merchandise related to Chance The Rapper. This aspect of the ruling underscores the court’s emphasis on protecting the rapper’s intellectual property.
Following the verdict, Chance The Rapper expressed his feelings on the outcome, stating, "I claim victory in the name of the Lord." Meanwhile, Corcoran’s legal representative, attorney Jay Scharkey, commented on the ruling by stressing the importance of formal agreements in the music industry. Scharkey remarked, "We respect the jury's decision, but the message to music managers is clear: Get it in writing." He also noted that the nominal $35 award highlighted the jury's view of Chance The Rapper's countersuit.
During the proceedings, Chance The Rapper acknowledged that no written contract existed between him and Corcoran. Instead, their arrangement was described as an "at-will agreement that didn’t address termination," a factor that influenced the jury’s decision.
The trial's conclusion marks a significant legal victory for Chance The Rapper, affirming the challenges artists face in managing business relationships without formal contracts. Both parties have yet to provide further public comments, and representatives for each side were contacted for additional statements.
This case adds to a growing list of notable hip-hop artists who have successfully navigated complex legal battles related to management and contractual disputes.
