AceShowbiz - Chance the Rapper is currently involved in a legal dispute with his former manager, Patrick Corcoran, regarding a $3 million lawsuit filed in Cook County, Illinois. The lawsuit dates back to 2020, when Corcoran claimed he was entitled to continued payments even after their professional relationship ended.
The lawsuit centers on Corcoran’s assertion that he and Chance the Rapper had an agreement entitling him to long-term compensation linked to the artist's earnings. However, during his testimony on March 10, the Grammy-winning rapper, whose real name is Chancelor Bennett, offered a contrasting version of their arrangement.
"We never described it as a contract until he sued me," Chance said in court. He explained that their understanding was an at-will agreement that did not specify any terms regarding termination of their working relationship.
Furthermore, Chance the Rapper stated that he was not aware of any clause requiring payments to continue after they parted ways. "We never discussed the sunset clause," he testified, adding that the discussions solely concerned how he would pay Corcoran during their collaboration.
Chance also detailed that throughout their time working together, he consistently paid Corcoran 15 percent of his net proceeds. He estimated that the total amount paid over the years amounted to millions of dollars.
"One thing that stayed consistent is that I paid him his 15 percent," Chance affirmed. The trial is ongoing, with both parties expected to continue presenting their arguments on the contractual disagreement in the coming days.
