AceShowbiz - Christmas music has a special place in many hearts, yet few songs resonate as deeply as “Silent Night.†Composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber and Joseph Mohr, this beloved carol is more than just a holiday tune. In 2011, it was recognized as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO. With its message of hope and peace, as expressed in the lyrics “all is calm, all is bright,†the song serves as a gentle reminder of tranquility, especially in tumultuous times. Even renowned musicians, despite their accolades and chart-topping hits, are drawn to the beauty of this classic. One particular singer from
Stevie Nicks recorded her rendition of “Silent Night†to support a noble cause. In October 1987, she contributed to the groundbreaking compilation album A Very Special Christmas. This project was conceived by producer Jimmy Iovine and his wife, Vicki, as a tribute to Iovine's late father, who adored Christmas but passed away during the holiday season. Nicks’ hauntingly beautiful version of “Silent Night†serves as the finale to this 15-song collection. The album features a stellar lineup of artists, including Bruce Springsteen, Sting, and Whitney Houston. Surprisingly, all artists participated without compensation, as every dollar raised was donated to the Special Olympics, an organization founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver in 1968 to promote inclusive sports training and competitions for individuals with disabilities.
With the support of A&M Records co-founders Jerry Moss and Herb Alpert, the project connected with Shriver to ensure that essential funding reached the programs and communities that needed it most. Over the past 38 years, the A Very Special Christmas series has released a total of 12 main albums. By its 25th anniversary in 2012, the initiative had raised over $109 million in royalties, making it the most successful benefit recording series in musical history.
Stevie Nicks’s affection for “Silent Night†extends beyond her initial recording. In 2000, she performed the carol once more alongside Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers for the A Very Special Christmas television special, which later featured on A Very Special Christmas 5. Through these heartfelt renditions, Nicks has helped keep the spirit of this cherished carol alive and thriving.
