AceShowbiz - The anticipation for a renewed "Tomb Raider" franchise, spurred by a variety of media endeavors including a Netflix anime series and a rumored new game, has recently hit a snag.
Amazon's much-anticipated live-action series featuring "Game of Thrones" star Sophie Turner as Lara Croft seems to be in jeopardy. According to a report by The Daily Mail, the series is described as "dead" by inside sources, citing a range of setbacks.
Initially announced to much fanfare, the "Tomb Raider" series was overseen by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Waller-Bridge, known for her critically acclaimed work on "Fleabag", was thrilled to be at the helm.
"If I could tell my teenage self this was happening, I think she'd explode. Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life, and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators," she stated at the time.
Despite this early enthusiasm, a number of issues have cast doubt on the project's future. The scripts appear to be taking longer than expected to develop, and Sophie Turner is reportedly occupied with other film commitments for most of the year. With the departure of Jennifer Salke from Amazon Studios, the project seems to lack the internal support it once had.
Lara Croft was portrayed by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander in the previous adaptations. As of now, it's uncertain whether the show will go ahead or be shelved permanently. Amazon has yet to release an official statement on the project's status, leaving fans in suspense.
For those eager to see more of Lara Croft, hope remains with the rumored new game in development by Crystal Dynamics. Until more concrete news surfaces, fans are left to wonder what could have been a thrilling new chapter in the "Tomb Raider" saga.
