AceShowbiz - The search for the next Lara Croft in Amazon's live-action "Tomb Raider" series has reached an exciting phase. "Game of Thrones" star Sophie Turner and "Murder on the Orient Express" actress Lucy Boynton are reportedly set to do screen tests, according to Deadline.
The series, scripted by "Fleabag" creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, was greenlighted by Amazon earlier this year. Turner and Boynton are among the leading candidates while Emma Corrin from "The Crown" and Mackenzie Davis from "Halt and Catch Fire" are on Amazon's wishlist, though reportedly not testing for the role.
Following her breakout role as Sansa Stark in "Game of Thrones", Turner has featured in notable films like "X-Men: Apocalypse" and "Dark Phoenix", and is currently appearing in the British crime drama "Joan". Boynton, known for her roles in "Bohemian Rhapsody", "The Pale Blue Eye", and "Barbie", has also been a significant presence in the recent comedy drama "The Politician".
Turner and Boynton face high expectations as they follow the footsteps of Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander, both of whom have portrayed the formidable Lara Croft in previous adaptations. Jolie set a high bar with her performance in two early-2000s films while Vikander's 2018 reboot was inspired by the 2013 video game but received a lukewarm critical reception, stalling any plans for a sequel.
With Waller-Bridge at the helm, the "Tomb Raider" series promises a fresh take on the beloved character. Known for her success with "Fleabag" and other major projects like "Killing Eve" and "No Time to Die", Waller-Bridge views this venture as a dream come true. "If I could tell my teenage self this was happening I think she'd explode," she shared. "Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can't wait to go on this adventure."
The impending series is part of a broader "Tomb Raider" universe planned by Amazon MGM, which includes a movie and a video game. While details about these additions remain scarce, the live-action series is clearly taking precedence, with fans anxiously waiting to see if it will match the success of Amazon's other video game adaptations like "Fallout".
Who will ultimately step into Lara Croft's boots remains to be seen, but with the talent involved and the high stakes of the series, the anticipation is palpable. Stay tuned as the adventure continues to unfold.
