AceShowbiz - Warner Bros./Legendary's "A Minecraft Movie" has made an astonishing debut, breaking numerous records and expectations. Over its opening weekend, the video game adaptation grossed $163 million domestically and $314 million worldwide.
The film scores the most successful opening on box office since last year's "Moana 2" and the biggest debut for a video game adaptation since 2023's "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," another hit starring Jack Black, which previously held the record at $146 million domestically over its initial three days.
Jack Black is joined by Jason Momoa and Danielle Brooks in the film, directed by Jared Hess of "Napoleon Dynamite" fame. The storyline, reminiscent of "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle," brings the popular video game to life by having the characters enter the pixelated world of "Minecraft."
Despite its financial success, “Minecraft†has faced mixed reviews. CinemaScore participants awarded the film an average grade of B+, falling short of the A grade received by "The Super Mario Bros. Movie."
Nonetheless, the movie's box office triumph underscores the growing influence of video game adaptations in the entertainment industry. This genre has seen several recent successes, including three well-received "Sonic the Hedgehog" films.
The impressive opening of “A Minecraft Movie†is a much-needed boost for the box office, which had a sluggish start in 2025 due to a dearth of major blockbusters and financial disappointments such as "Snow White."
The success of "Minecraft" highlights the potential for video game adaptations to continue dominating the box office in the coming years. Projects like a live-action "The Legend of Zelda" film set for 2027 and a "The Sims" movie from Margot Robbie are poised to build on this momentum. Additionally, a sequel to "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is scheduled for 2026.
