AceShowbiz - Jameela Jamil, best known for her role in "The Good Place", has opened up about the debilitating impact of insomnia on her mental health. The 39-year-old candidly discussed how chronic sleeplessness drove her to multiple suicide attempts, leaving her feeling hopeless and nihilistic.
"Every suicide attempt I have ever made was a result of just that few too many days in a row without a wink of sleep," Jamil wrote on Substack.
Jamil, who has been in a relationship with Grammy winner James Blake since 2015, described insomnia as "the absolute ghetto of the mind, body, and soul."
She elaborated on the dark nights filled with loneliness and despair, stating, "You lose your mind. You fully lose your grip on reality. Hopelessness and bitterness take hold of you and sink into your marrow."
Her insomnia has not only affected her mental well-being but also her physical health and daily life. Jamil mentioned how a lack of sleep impacted her intimate relationship and made her crave unhealthy foods. "It's being desperate for donuts all f****** day because you need some respite and consolation," she confessed.
Amidst these struggles, Jamil has been vocal about her recovery journey. In an effort to combat her insomnia, she has made significant lifestyle changes, including giving up caffeine and reducing her carb intake.
She also prioritized walking 10,000 steps a day to enhance her sleep quality. "I'm finally clean off all sleeping pills," she shared, warning others about the dangers of dependency and the risk of early-onset dementia.
Moreover, Jamil continues to be a powerful advocate for mental health, using her platform to talk about issues such as anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and eating disorders.
Her transparency provides solace to many who face similar struggles. "I would, without flinching, trade in all the success, money, and adventures I've had to just be a good sleeper," she expressed, underscoring the gravity of her situation.
Jameela Jamil's openness about her insomnia paints a poignant picture of the agony so many endure in silence. By sharing her story, she not only seeks healing for herself but also hopes to inspire others to seek help and find solace in knowing they are not alone.
