AceShowbiz - Johnny Depp opens up about the intense media scrutiny he faced as a young Hollywood star. In a new documentary about his frequent collaborator Tim Burton, the 61-year-old actor shares his discomfort with the early fame he encountered.
Depp reminisces about the overwhelming attention he received, stating, "I was completely freaked out by [fame]. Paparazzi would take pictures of me. People would whisper and point their finger and stuff. I felt like sort of this raw nerve on display."
Depp, known for his iconic roles such as Captain Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of the Caribbean", recalls how his career trajectory took a significant turn with the 1990 film "Edward Scissorhands" after he beat out Tom Cruise and other actors for the lead role.
Depp recounts the filming process as both isolating and revelatory. He noted how Burton excluded him from all rehearsals, which initially made him paranoid about his performance.
"I was absolutely convinced that I was blowing it. Tim had rehearsed everyone else in the cast. Everyone. Not me. He didn't rehearse me. He was excluding me from the cast and crew, isolating me," Depp said.
This deliberate isolation was Burton's method to help Depp genuinely feel the loneliness that his character, Edward, experienced.
"It was scary. I was uber paranoid. Why is [Burton] not rehearsing me? Maybe he trusts me. No he doesn't. He doesn't trust you, what are you nuts? He's going to cast someone else, man," Depp confessed.
The filmmaker's approach ultimately worked, as "Edward Scissorhands" became a significant hit, cementing Depp's status in Hollywood and leading to the formation of a long-lasting partnership with Burton.
