AceShowbiz - Johnny Depp, 61, is rumored to return to the beloved "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise. According to the UK website Express, Disney executives are close to finalizing a deal to bring back the legendary Captain Jack Sparrow.
A senior executive disclosed, "It's very close to being a done deal. A script is already in place and Disney views this as a series reboot, meaning the door will be wide open for more future episodes for Johnny, despite everything he has been through."
Depp's return comes after he was initially dropped by Disney following a high-profiled defamation case involving his ex-wife, Amber Heard. Although Depp lost his defamation suit in the UK, he emerged victorious in a U.S. civil trial against Heard, which significantly marred her career but vindicated Depp in the eyes of many fans.
The rumors of Depp's comeback have sparked a mixed reaction online. One passionate fan exclaimed, "@disneystudios, listen to the people. They're the ones buying the tickets. You already saw what happened with the Snow White movie. No one wants to see Pirates of the Caribbean without Johnny Depp!"
While some are excited by the news, not all responses have been entirely supportive. One user expressed, "Captain Jack Sparrow remains spectacular, even if Johnny Depp is the opposite," and another opined, "The guy that played captain Barbosa (Oscar winner Geoffrey Rush, 73) in pirates of the Caribbean seas acted better than Johnny Depp."
Currently, Depp is working on the film "Day Drinker" alongside Penelope Cruz and Madelyn Cline. In this project, Depp portrays a mysterious guest on a private yacht while Cline plays a bartender. The duo becomes entangled with a criminal figure, played by Cruz, as their lives intertwine in unexpected ways.
Lionsgate has released first-look photo of Depp's character, showcasing a nearly unrecognizable Depp with salt and pepper hair and beard, donning a blue suit. Fans were taken aback, with one remarking, "Did not realize that was Johnny Depp till I read the caption!"
Directed by Depp's longtime friend Marc Webb, known for "500 Days of Summer" and "[The Amazing Spider-Man]" series, "Day Drinker" promises to be yet another intriguing chapter in Depp's storied career.
