AceShowbiz - Christopher McQuarrie's latest "Mission: Impossible" movie is already making splashes months before its official release. An early screening of "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning" saw one viewer nearly having a heart attack, emphasizing the intense and ambitious stunts that the series is known for.
"We had a small screening and someone said, 'I was suffocating throughout the entire sequence. I almost had a heart attack,' " McQuarrie shared in an interview with Total Film, cheerfully adding, "And I thought, 'I guess we did something right.' "
The eighth installment appears poised to push the envelope even further than its predecessors, delivering set pieces capable of surprising even long-term fans. From hanging off a biplane in mid-air to intense underwater sequences, the trailer alone has hinted at the kind of breathtaking action scenes we can expect.
These feats are not new for lead star Tom Cruise, who's become synonymous with executing some of the most dangerous stunts in cinema history, including high-altitude jumps and motorcycle cliff dives.
For those unfamiliar with the plot, "The Final Reckoning" continues from where "Dead Reckoning" left off. Ethan Hunt, played by Cruise, and his team must retrieve the source code of a dangerous AI entity trapped beneath Arctic ice. The stakes are higher than ever, with global implications hinted at through the return of Angela Bassett's character, Erika Sloane, now the President of the United States.
The film also features an impressive ensemble cast including Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, and newcomers like Hannah Waddingham from "Ted Lasso".
The director's focus on creating sequences that affect viewers on a visceral level aligns with the franchise's legacy of pushing the boundaries of action filmmaking. Since McQuarrie took the helm in 2015's "Rogue Nation", each film has aimed to outdo its predecessor. "The most difficult thing" they've ever done, as McQuarrie put it, might just be found in the upcoming eighth film, with adrenaline-pumping moments that even made Cruise nervous during filming.
As speculation grows about whether this might be Cruise's final outing as Ethan Hunt, the title "The Final Reckoning" has stoked rumors of a grand farewell to the beloved character and series. Whether this marks the end or simply the next chapter, fans can expect an unforgettable ride when "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning" hits theaters on May 23, 2025.
