AceShowbiz - SPOILER ALERT Season 2 of "Squid Game" concluded with a shocking twist as Gi-hun's (Lee Jung-jae) best friend Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan) was murdered by The Front Man (Lee Byung-hun). This betrayal was particularly gutting for viewers who, unlike Gi-hun, knew The Front Man's true identity: In-ho, a previous Squid Game winner who posed as Young-il. In-ho's cruel act punished Gi-hun for leading a player uprising.
Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk explained that this cliffhanger ending served as a necessary plot point, giving closure to Gi-hun's story arc and setting the stage for season 3. The next season will follow Gi-hun's journey as he grapples with the guilt and failure that weighs heavily on him after losing Jung-bae. Hwang teased that Gi-hun will face a "critical crossroads" as he decides whether to continue his mission against the Squid Game organizers.
The Season 2 finale's uprising has cast doubt on the show's usual format. However, Hwang hinted that the mid-credits scene offers a glimpse into a new setting for season 3, possibly featuring a different version of the deadly games.
Hwang revealed that while he feels "happiness" when characters die in "Squid Game", it was difficult to manage the large cast on set. Nonetheless, he promised that season 2 was "really satisfying" to shoot and that future seasons will bring "an expanded story, more intense story, and definitely more entertaining" experience.
