AceShowbiz - "Deadpool & Wolverine" marks the 2024 Marvel Cinematic Universe's standout release, standing as a bold testament to 25 years of Fox Marvel movies. The concern that Deadpool's humor might mellow under Disney's reign was quickly dispelled. The film is as edgy and self-aware as fans have come to expect.
Ryan Reynolds, who co-wrote the script, embraced the meta-narrative style for which Deadpool is famed. The journey to crafting the perfect plot was anything but straightforward.
In a candid chat with Andrew Garfield on Variety's "Actors on Actors" series, Reynolds revealed, "I pitched one where I'm like, 'It's a two-hander with me and the hunter who shot Bambi's mom.' Their answer was, 'We don't touch Bambi, Ryan.' "
Disney's stance on Bambi wasn't surprising, especially considering their plans for a live-action remake and the sensitive nature of the story.
Other pitch ideas from Reynolds included a narrative inspired by the 1950 film "Rashomon," a story from three perspectives, and a Sundance-style drama without special effects. However, these concepts were also shelved. Even with Hugh Jackman's return as Wolverine, the journey to the final script took over a year and a half of brainstorming.
"Deadpool & Wolverine" deftly critiques the current state of MCU projects, including its struggles with Blade and the multiverse. Meanwhile, the film retained its critical meta-commentary. One joke that didn't make the cut reflected this: Deadpool's line, "Disney is so cheap. I can barely breathe with all this Mickey Mouse c*** in my throat," was one such jibe ultimately replaced with a risqué Pinocchio gag.
The film's ultimate success lies in its ability to stay true to its roots while pushing boundaries. Despite facing creative and budgetary constraints, "Deadpool & Wolverine" delivered on its promises, showcasing Ryan Reynolds' knack for balancing irreverence with heartfelt moments. Its critical and audience acclaim suggests that the Merc with a Mouth has firmly found his place in the MCU.
"Deadpool & Wolverine" is now available for streaming on Disney+. For fans, it's a reminder that some stories are worth the wait.
