AceShowbiz - HBO's "Harry Potter" series has generated immense buzz since its announcement in 2023, with fans eagerly awaiting the "faithful adaptation" of the iconic book series. The project has faced intense scrutiny, from Rowling's controversies to the elaborate search for a writer, ultimately resulting in the hiring of Francesca Gardiner.
The series' casting has reached a fever pitch, with some 32,000 kids auditioning for the lead roles of Harry, Hermione, and Ron. Rumors have circulated about well-known British actors being considered for adult roles, including Mark Rylance as Dumbledore, Mark Strong as Snape, and Sharon Horgan as McGonagall.
Despite the high level of secrecy surrounding the casting process, Oscar winner Mark Rylance has been linked to the role of Dumbledore, while Paapa Essiedu and Brett Goldstein are rumored to be in consideration for Snape and Hagrid, respectively.
HBO remains tight-lipped about the casting, but insiders believe that most of the deals have yet to be finalized. The series will reportedly adhere to the "canonical" ages of the characters, making Snape a younger 31 and the Dursleys significantly younger than their movie counterparts.
Costume designer Holly Waddington ("(Poor Things") has been confirmed as part of the crew. The series is slated to debut on HBO in late 2026-27 and will be filmed at Warner Bros Studios Leavesden, where the movies were shot.
Despite controversy surrounding Rowling's involvement, HBO has expressed confidence in the project. Showrunner Francesca Gardiner, who devoured the books in her youth, has emphasized the series' focus on a "British 1990s production" and offers a "bigger sandpit to play in" than the movies.
Director Mark Mylod plans to "dig into the depths and crevices of Hogwarts," while Casey Bloys, HBO boss, has stressed the company's comfort in working with Rowling and their successful collaboration on last year's Hogwarts video game.
