AceShowbiz - Despite its legacy and popularity, "Parks and Recreation" was constantly on the verge of cancellation. Chris Pratt, aware of this precarious position, resorted to desperate measures to give the show a fighting chance.
In Jim O'Heir's book "Welcome to Pawnee," Pratt discloses that he embraced his character Andy Dwyer's clumsy, careless nature as a means to garner support. "I was like, 'All right, I'm going to go do it,' " he said, referring to his friend's suggestion to "break s***" and "go down swinging" because "people love to see stuff get broken."
During the season 2 episode "Greg Pikitis," Pratt took this destructive approach to its extreme. After vandalizing Greg Pikitis's house alongside Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler), Pratt recalled, "I took a glass, smashed it on the wall, it broke a sign. The kid who played Greg Pikitis, he kind of broke and laughed."
This destructive behavior empowered Pratt, leading him to destroy props throughout the show's run. "I went through so many props - I was breaking computers, I'd put a huge dent in a car. I just did the craziest stuff," he said. "There were times where it was like, 'Props can't fix that, electrical has to come in.' "
Michael Schur, the showrunner, confirmed the constant threat of cancellation. "Every year, we got to the end of the season, and we didn't know whether we were coming back," he said. "We never took any of it for granted because we almost got canceled so many times."
Despite the show's uncertain future, Pratt's antics played a crucial role in its eventual success. The once-struggling "The Office" spinoff has become one of the most beloved sitcoms in modern TV history.
