Years after turning down a role from James Cameron, Josh Brolin reflects on his decision that angered the famed filmmaker but insists his rejection had nothing to do with the director.

AceShowbiz - Josh Brolin recently opened up about a decision that might have irked legendary director James Cameron. In a revealing interview on "In Depth With Graham Bensinger", Brolin reflected on the time he turned down an offer to be part of an "Avatar" sequel, a move that he believes did not sit well with Cameron.

"I heard he was angry," Brolin said. "I understand it, because when you have something in your mind and you have a status and a power... you're used to people feeling really grateful that you are offering it to them."

However, Brolin admitted he was unsure of Cameron's exact feelings, as he didn't know the director personally. "It wasn't based on him," he clarified. "It was based on the [project]."

Back in a 2017 interview with Esquire, Brolin didn't shy away from sharing the antagonism he faced after passing on the "Avatar" series. "James Cameron's f***ing calling me this name and that name," the actor recalled. Brolin noted that if confronted by Cameron, he would stand by his words and explain, "Because it happened."

Interestingly, while Brolin passed on "Avatar", he did eventually join another expansive sci-fi franchise "Dune". Brolin revealed that his involvement in the film was almost serendipitous. "I wasn't trying to get Dune," he explained. He was pitching a different idea when producer Mary Parent suggested him for the role.

Given his positive experience working with "Dune" director Denis Villeneuve on "Sicario" in 2015, Brolin accepted immediately. "I didn't even need to read that, because it's Denis, and I love Denis," he said. "So I had a relationship with Denis, and it was like, 'I don't care what the role is, I'll do anything with you.' "

The actor also shared an anecdote about a shelved "Hunchback of Notre Dame" project that could have seen him collaborating with Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. "I remember Johnny Depp was going to be the poet, and I'd met with Tim Burton in Cannes and was on Johnny's boat talking with Tim, and he was really into it," Brolin recalled.

Despite the enthusiasm from such big names, the project never saw the light of day due to studio issues. Brolin mentioned even offering the project to the Coen brothers at one point.

Josh Brolin's career is a testament to the dynamic and often unpredictable nature of Hollywood, where even an unexpected pitch meeting can lead to a pivotal role in a major film. As he continues to choose his projects and navigate the ups and downs of the industry, fans remain eager to see what iconic role he takes on next.
