AceShowbiz - Robert Downey Jr., renowned for his roles in iconic films such as "Iron Man" and "Oppenheimer", recently embarked on a new venture by making his Broadway debut in "McNeal", staged at the Lincoln Center Theater in New York City. The titular play by Ayad Akhtar, however, has not received the warm welcome Downey might have hoped for. Critics' reviews for the play have been less than favorable, and insiders suggest that the negative feedback has taken a toll on the celebrated actor.
Portraying an acclaimed novelist wrestling with alcoholism and mental health issues, Downey poured his heart into this challenging role. An insider quoted by Closer Weekly said, "Robert took a bold leap from dominating the silver screen to trying his luck on stage. But the brutal reviews have shattered him. He poured his heart into this project, only for it to bomb - it's been a blow to his ego!"
The critiques have focused mainly on the play's tone and pace rather than Downey's performance. Variety's Aramide Tinubu described "McNeal" as "a dull and garbled play that says very little about ethics and artificial intelligence and instead hoists up a pompous and exhausting man who has only ever cared about himself and his legacy."
Similarly, Jesse Green from The New York Times acknowledged Downey's efforts but noted, "The play needs him to be outrageous enough to support its outre plot points, which are otherwise inexplicable even for a man who bolts down quarts of bourbon when facing a diagnosis of advanced liver disease. Still, you feel Downey straining to justify McNeal without softening him, an impossible job in an impossible part."
Despite the critical reception, Downey's loyal fanbase has shown their support. One fan commented, "I saw it on Friday night and you were phenomenal. Definitely more than a few scenes I can't stop thinking about. The whole cast was great."
The setback on Broadway doesn't seem to be affecting Downey's illustrious movie career. He and his wife Susan are in talks to produce "The Hider", based on Julianna Baggott's short story, with Downey taking the lead role. Other projects in the pipeline include "Sherlock Holmes 3" and his return to the Marvel universe as Dr. Doom in two upcoming "Avengers" films.
Though Downey's first foray into Broadway may not have gone as well as anticipated, it seems clear that this versatile actor remains undeterred, continuing to captivate audiences on screen and potentially revisiting the stage in the future. For now, his fans eagerly await his next cinematic adventures.
