AceShowbiz - Two years after his highly publicized defamation trial, Johnny Depp has characterized his courtroom experience as a "soap opera," drawing parallels to the characters in his new film, "Modi - Three Days on the Wing of Madness".
At a press conference for the film at the San Sebastian International Film Festival in Spain, Depp reflected on his own journey and the challenges depicted in "Modi". "Each (character) has their story because I'm sure we can say that I've been through a number of things here and there," said Depp. "But, you know, I'm alright. I think we've all been through a number of things, ultimately. Maybe yours didn't turn into a soap opera. I mean, televised, in fact."
Depp's reference to a "soap opera" likely stems from the extensive media coverage and public scrutiny surrounding his trial with Amber Heard. The proceedings were livestreamed, attracting a vast audience and creating a media frenzy.
Regarding his role in "Modi", Depp expressed his contentment with being behind the camera. "I didn't have to be in it, which is much more fun," he said. "I realized my job was not a director at all. I was merely there to capture."
Despite his initial reluctance, Depp also hinted at the possibility of directing again in the future.
The seven-week trial in 2022 resulted in a jury finding Heard liable on all counts of defamation. Depp was awarded $10.35 million in damages, while Heard received $2 million in damages for one of her counterclaims.
The couple settled the case in December 2022, with Heard paying Depp $1 million. Depp has since filed an appeal to overturn the verdict in his favor.
Depp's new film, "Modi", stars Riccardo Scamarcio as the titular artist and is based on Dennis McIntyre's play "Modigliani". The film portrays Modigliani's life in Paris during World War I and his struggle for recognition.
