AceShowbiz - Elton John returned to the spotlight at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival, drawing attention not only for his acclaimed documentary but also for his remarkable resilience while recovering from a severe eye infection.
The 77-year-old music legend took to the red carpet at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto on September 8 for the premiere of his new documentary, "Elton John: Never Too Late." The film, co-directed by his husband, David Furnish, and renowned filmmaker R.J. Cutler, chronicles John's rise to rock stardom, featuring iconic moments from his 1975 Dodger Stadium performance to his final North American concert in 2022.
Despite the excitement surrounding the film, John's severe eye infection was a somber backdrop to the event. The illness has left him with "limited vision in one eye" for over seven weeks, making it impossible for him to fully enjoy the festival screening.
"The love I have for this family, my family, my children, and my friends, has never been better," an emotional John stated during a panel discussion. "I'm 77 years old, and I'm having the best time of my life, except for this f**king eye. I wish I could see you, but I can't."
During an interview with Variety, John elaborated on his condition. "I couldn't really see it because of my eye, but I sensed it. I'd seen it before. I don't know. Seeing it with an audience is far more emotional than just sitting with a bunch of people. I got more out of it last night than I did when I saw it the first time, and it hit harder."
John described the distressing impact of his eye infection on his daily life. "What's happened with my eye has been very... just, it's been very distressing because I'm used to getting out in the morning, looking at all the newspapers, looking at the charts, looking at everything, how the world is doing creatively, and I've lost that for the time being," he said.
Despite the challenges, he remains optimistic about his recovery, "It's been seven weeks since I've been able to see all of this, but the prospect is good. I had a hell of a time."
"Elton John: Never Too Late" also delves into John's personal life, highlighting his enduring relationship with Furnish and their children, Zachary and Elijah. Fans won't have to wait long to get a glimpse of the documentary; it will be available for streaming on Disney+ starting December 13.
