AceShowbiz - Pop music sensation Katy Perry will be receiving the coveted Video Vanguard Award at this year's MTV Video Music Awards on September 11. In addition to the accolade, Perry is also scheduled to deliver a career-spanning medley of her biggest hits live from the UBS Arena in New York.
"Katy is a musical powerhouse and true pop culture icon," said Bruce Gillmer, President of Music, Music Talent, Programming & Events at Paramount, in a press release. "With her game-changing creative vision, she has become a global phenomenon and taken over the world's biggest stages."
Perry's VMAs journey has been illustrious, having won five Moon Persons over the years. She earned Video of the Year in 2011 for "Firework," as well as Best Collaboration and Best Special Effects for "E.T." with Kanye West the same year. Additional accolades include Best Art Direction for "Wide Awake" in 2012 and Best Female Video for "Dark Horse" with Juicy J in 2014.
The pop icon previously hosted the VMAs in 2017 and has performed multiple times, making her the first artist to host and receive both Video of the Year and the Video Vanguard Award. She joins a prestigious list of past recipients including Shakira, Nicki Minaj, Missy Elliott, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce Knowles, Rihanna, and Madonna.
This year's VMAs will also feature performances from Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, Camila Cabello, GloRila, and Rauw Alejandro. The ceremony was rescheduled to September 11 to accommodate the presidential debate, maintaining its illustrious tradition of showcasing the top talents and their contributions to music and pop culture.
The event will also highlight Perry's impending release of her sixth album, "143," which drops just a week after the awards, featuring collaborations with Kim Petras, Doechii, and 21 Savage. The lead single "Woman's World" debuted in July, followed by "Lifetimes" earlier this month.
Fan voting for the 2024 VMAs is already underway, with Taylor Swift leading the nominations with ten nods, primarily for her "Fortnight" music video featuring Post Malone, who himself has garnered nine nominations. Eminem, Ariana Grande, and Sabrina Carpenter are also in the running for various awards.
Perry's recognition at this year's VMAs serves both as a tribute to her lasting impact on the music industry and a celebration of her continued influence and creativity.
