AceShowbiz - Will Ferrell recently shared on the "Messy" podcast that his late co-star in the 2003 Christmas classic film "Elf", James Caan, initially had some harsh criticism for Ferrell's performance as Buddy the Elf. During production, Caan would tease Ferrell, saying, "I don't get you. You're not funny."
Ferrell responded with a playful, "I know! I'm not Robin Williams." Despite the humorous exchanges, Ferrell admitted that Caan's annoyance with Buddy's on-screen behavior helped strengthen the comedic dynamic between the characters.
Caan had planned to gradually escalate his character's frustration, but he ultimately chose to save it for the climax scene in the boardroom. Ferrell praised Caan's strategic approach, acknowledging that he was "completely right."
However, Caan's perception of Ferrell's performance changed dramatically after seeing the final film at its premiere. As they were leaving the theater, Caan told Ferrell, "I thought everything you were doing while we were filming was way too over-the-top, but now that I see it in the movie, it's brilliant."
Ferrell, who was anxious about the film's success as it was his first major project after leaving "Saturday Night Live", ultimately felt vindicated by Caan's praise. The film became a resounding success, earning over $220 million at the worldwide box office.
Despite Caan's initial apprehension, the chemistry between the two actors and Ferrell's commitment to the over-the-top characterization of Buddy made "Elf" an enduring Christmas classic.
