AceShowbiz - Minnie Driver and Samantha Morton, who have both graced the silver screen for decades, have recently taken on the roles of powerful historical figures on the Starz drama "The Serpent Queen". Their experiences on the show reflect the progress that women have made in the entertainment industry.
Driver, 54, recalled that in the past, actresses were often seen as "overly sexualized" and were limited to roles that focused solely on their physical appearance. "We're allowed to be over 40 now," she said. "There's now a recognition that women have more to offer than just their sexuality."
This expanded range of opportunities extends to roles that showcase the "extraordinary expansiveness" that comes with aging, as well as the complexities of motherhood and the choice to be childless. Driver observed that female sexuality is no longer the primary source of a woman's power or attractiveness.
Morton, known for her character acting, shared that she was able to avoid the age-related decline in roles that many actresses face. However, she acknowledged the shift in attitudes towards older actresses, noting that they are now valued for their experience and talent.
Both actresses emphasized the importance of portraying strong historical figures like Catherine de Medici and Elizabeth I. Driver commented that these characters "defied the norms of their times" and demonstrated the challenges women faced in achieving power.
Driver praised the show's creator, Justin Haythe, for writing complex and dangerous women, challenging traditional representations of female characters. She added, "I knew it was gonna be a great battle."
The second season of "The Serpent Queen" premieres on July 12, offering a glimpse into the transformative roles that women are now playing in the entertainment industry.
