AceShowbiz - As production of James Gunn's upcoming "Superman" movie picks up speed, recent casting announcements have spotlighted fresh faces Mikaela Hoover and Christopher MacDonald.
Hoover, who has appeared in multiple Gunn-directed projects like "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "The Suicide Squad", will portray Cat Grant, a character first introduced in the 1980s as a gossip columnist for the Daily Planet. MacDonald, a relative newcomer with no familial ties to the veteran actor from "Happy Gilmore", will bring the character of Ron Troupe to life. Troupe is celebrated in DC Comics as a meticulous and determined reporter.
This isn't the first time Cat Grant will appear on screen. Earlier incarnations included portrayals by Tracy Scoggins in "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman" and Calista Flockhart in the "Arrowverse" series "Supergirl". Meanwhile, Ron Troupe's debut on screen stirs curiosity given his rich backstory in the comics, where he took over Clark Kent's beat during the dramatic "Death of Superman" arc.
The film already boasts an impressive ensemble cast. David Corenswet headlines as Clark Kent/Superman while Rachel Brosnahan plays Lois Lane. Nicholas Hoult is set to take on the villainous role of Lex Luthor.
Other key players include Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho. Additionally, Sara Sampaio, Skyler Gisondo, Pruitt Taylor Vince, and Neva Howell contribute to the all-star lineup, with the potential debut of Milly Alcock's Supergirl adding even more speculation and buzz among fans.
The first visual of Corenswet donning his Super-suit was unveiled earlier, featuring a seasoned Man of Steel poised to handle yet another catastrophe in Metropolis. "Superman," part of the "Chapter One: Gods and Monsters" initiative under the newly relaunched DC Universe, is a crucial project heading the revamped slate, overseen by Gunn and Peter Safran.
Gunn's directorial vision will explore Superman's dual existence as both Clark Kent and the emblematic hero, providing a narrative driven by the character's innate human kindness - a trait that's sometimes considered antiquated in the modern world. The film's script, drawing upon characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, promises a blend of action and philosophical musings on identity and heritage.
Scheduled for release on July 11, 2025, anticipation for "Superman" continues to crescendo. Gunn captured this enthusiasm perfectly, marking the start of principal photography with a nod to Superman's in-universe birthday, "Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be - coincidentally and unplanned - Superman's birthday."
With an expansive, star-studded cast and a director reputed for blending heartfelt storytelling with blockbuster flair, "Superman" aims to soar high, rekindling the legacy of this iconic character for a new generation.
