AceShowbiz - Bowen Yang has finally addressed the awkward situation between him and Dave Chappelle on "Saturday Night Live" earlier this year. After seemingly distancing himself from Dave during the tail end of the Dakota Johnson-hosted episode, Bowen admitted that he was puzzled by "The Closer" star's sudden appearance.
For the record, Bowen stood on the opposite end of the stage with his arms folded when Dave appeared on camera for the final goodnight. Dave himself wasn't featured in any sketches during the episode.
Now in an interview with Variety, the 33-year-old clarified, "I stand where I always stand on [goodnights]." He added, "It was not a physical distance that anyone was creating. It had to do with so many things that were completely internal."
Asked if he was happy with Dave's random appearance, Bowen replied, "It was about other people's response in the show." The Australian-born comedian, who was hired to join the writing staff of the NBC sketch comedy series back in September 2018, continued, "I was just confused, that was it."
Fellow "Saturday Night Live" star Kenan Thompson also weighed in on the matter. He said it was "jarring" to see the moment make headlines because cast members were also confused about why Dave showed up.
Dave sparked controversy in October 2021 after the release of "The Closer". In the controversial special, he said, "Gender is a fact. Every human being in this room, every human being on earth, had to pass through the legs of a woman to be on earth. That is a fact."
"Now, I am not saying that to say trans women aren't women, I am just saying that those p***ies that they got… you know what I mean?" he continued. "I'm not saying it's not p***y, but it's Beyond P***y or Impossible P***y. It tastes like p***y, but that's not quite what it is, is it? That's not blood. That's beet juice."
