The 'Horizon: An American Saga' star discusses the importance of strong female characters in his movies, targeting male audiences while empowering women.

AceShowbiz - Oscar-winner Kevin Costner has a unique perspective on filmmaking: he makes movies for men but insists on strong female characters. During an interview on Josh Horowitz's podcast, Costner emphasized the crucial role women play in his stories.

"When you start writing, you go, 'Where's the woman?' It just drives the story in every plot line," he said. He believes it's essential to present women as fully fleshed-out characters, even in Western settings.

Costner praised the women in his latest film, "Horizon: An American Saga", especially Sienna Miller, for bringing his characters to life. He expressed gratitude to women for supporting his films, acknowledging that they bring their male partners to see his Westerns.

Despite targeting male audiences, Costner remains committed to creating empowering female characters throughout his career. "I thank you women for dragging your men here," he said. "It was a Western, after all."

"Horizon: An American Saga" is the first installment in a four-part film series, with the second part slated for August release. It tells the story of pre- and post-Civil War expansion over 15 years. The ensemble cast includes Sam Worthington, Abbey Lee and Luke Wilson.

Costner's directorial return has been met with enthusiasm. He explained that he had to direct "Horizon" to ensure its authenticity and deliver its full potential. "I believe in the story, and I believe so much in it that for me I think that comes shining through my movies," he said.

With "Horizon: An American Saga," Kevin Costner continues his legacy of crafting strong female characters while catering to his male audience. The film is now in theaters.
