AceShowbiz - Rock legend Billy Joel has traded his helicopter for the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) to travel to and from his record-breaking residency at Madison Square Garden. The 74-year-old singer, who previously flew his chopper to the venue, has swapped the skies for the tracks due to safety concerns.
Joel's decision to use public transportation surprised his team, who initially worried that his stardom would cause a commotion. However, the "Uptown Girl" crooner has reported that his commute has been uneventful, with fellow commuters mistaking him for an impersonator.
Despite his recent embrace of a more modest mode of transport, Joel will conclude his 150th and final show at the storied Midtown venue on July 25. CBS will film his March 28 concert for a special that will air in mid-April, marking a first for the rockstar.
Joel's 10-year residency at Madison Square Garden has been an unprecedented success, with over 1.6 million tickets sold. During this historic run, he has set multiple records for the venue, including the most consecutive performances by any artist (with 12 consecutive shows in 2006).
Although Joel will end his residency, he shows no signs of slowing down. In February, he released his first new song in nearly 20 years, "Turn the Lights Back On". He is also continuing his series of U.S. concerts with fellow legends, including Sting, Stevie Nicks and Rod Stewart.
