AceShowbiz - Movie critics have spoken. On the same day the nominations for the 79th Golden Globe Awards were announced, the nominees for the 27th Critics' Choice Awards were also unveiled to public. Not too far different from the Golden Globes shortlist, "Belfast" is once again leading the race with "West Side Story" as both earn 11 nods apiece, followed close behind by "Dune" and "The Power of the Dog" with 10 each.
Steven Spielberg's musical and the Kenneth Branagh-directed comedy are up for the coveted Best Picture along with "CODA", "Don't Look Up", "Dune", "King Richard", "Licorice Pizza", "Nightmare Alley", "The Power of the Dog" and "tick, tick…Boom!".
A surprise appears in the Best Actor category, with Nicolas Cage ("Pig") coming as one of the contenders for the prize. He is up against Benedict Cumberbatch ("The Power of the Dog"), Peter Dinklage ("Cyrano"), Andrew Garfield ("tick, tick…Boom!"), Will Smith ("King Richard") and Denzel Washington ("The Tragedy of Macbeth").
Lady GaGa ("House of Gucci"), Nicole Kidman ("Being the Ricardos") and Kristen Stewart ("Spencer") are among the Best Actress nominees along with Jessica Chastain ("The Eyes of Tammy Faye"), Olivia Colman ("The Lost Daughter") and Alana Haim ("Licorice Pizza").
"Belfast" cast also gains recognition as they are nominated for Best Acting Ensemble. Other movies vying the prize are "Don't Look Up", "The Harder They Fall", "Licorice Pizza", "The Power of the Dog" and "West Side Story".
"Belfast" director Kenneth Branagh and "West Side Story" helmer Steven Spielberg are pitted against each in Best Director category. They are up for the prize along with Paul Thomas Anderson ("Licorice Pizza"), Jane Campion ("The Power of the Dog"), Guillermo del Toro ("Nightmare Alley") and Denis Villeneuve ("Dune").
"We are so proud to be honoring this amazing list of films and the incredibly talented people who made them during this extremely challenging time," Critics' Choice Association CEO Joey Berlin said of the nominees. "All eyes are going to be on the Fairmont Century Plaza red carpet and ballroom on January 9th, when the biggest stars in movies and television will be gathered to celebrate the best of the best in entertainment this past year. In the safest possible environment, it will mark the return of the kind of glitz and glamor we haven't been able to enjoy in far too long."
The 2022 Critics' Choice Awards gala will be hosted by Taye Diggs and Nicole Byer and broadcast live on The CW and TBS on Sunday, January 9 from 7-10 P.M. ET.
