The 'Fast and Furious' spin-off is unmoved at No. 1 of the domestic chart, while the horror movie based on Alvin Schwartz's books leads the newcomers with a debut at the second place.

AceShowbiz - "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" is apparently not so scary to "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw". The horror movie adaptation of Alvin Schwartz's children's book series of the same name fails to move last week's champion from the first position at North American box office with an estimated $20.8 million gross on its opening weekend.
Still, it's a strong opening for the Andre Ovredal-directed thriller, which was made on a reported $25 million budget. Leading the crop of newcomers at No. 2, the Guillermo del Toro-produced movie received mostly favorable reviews from critics with an approval rating of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes and earned an average grade of C from audiences polled by CinemaScore.
Pleased with the movie's performance, del Toro says in a statement, "The filmmakers and the team at CBS Films are thrilled that moviegoers are embracing the world of 'Scary Stories'. It's particularly satisfying to see families experiencing the fun of the movie together."
Other newcomers don't fare as well as "Scary Stories". Also competing for younger moviegoers, "Dora and the Lost City of Gold" debuts at No. 4 with approximately $17 million. The movie was received well by audience with an A CinemaScore, which could give it a strong boost from word of mouth.
Fox 2000's heartfelt drama "The Art of Racing in the Rain", which is based on Garth Stein's best-selling novel about a dog named Enzo, opens at No. 6 with an estimated $8.1 million. "The Kitchen (2019)", a comedy starring Tiffany Haddish and Melissa McCarthy among others, follows at No. 7 with approximately $5.5 million.
"There are always going to be casualties when there are this many," says Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box-office tracker Comscore. "They cannot always be lined up in the top four rankings."
Meanwhile, "Hobbs & Shaw" maintains its reign on its second week despite dropping 57.7% in ticket sales from last week. It has added an estimated $25.4 million to its domestic cume. Internationally, the movie has collected $244.1 million for a current global total of $332.6 million against its $200 million budget.
"The Lion King (2019)" is down one place to No. 3 with an estimated $20 million, while Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" drops two spots at No. 5 with approximately $11.6 million.
"Bring the Soul: The Movie", a documentary about South Korean boyband BTS (Bangtan Boys) on their recent world tour, rounds out the top 10 with an estimated $2.3 million after opening in 873 theaters. "The Peanut Butter Falcon", meanwhile, has an impressive location average of $12,108, earning $205,236 (No. 18) after playing in 17 cinemas.
