Sony wants a sequel to the Miles Morales-centric animated movie as well as an all-female spin-off that may center on Spider-Gwen.

AceShowbiz - Two weeks before the release of "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse", Sony Pictures Animation is already setting up plans to continue the adventures of Miles Morales on the big screen. The studio is reportedly developing a sequel as well as a spin-off to the upcoming animated movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Voltron" co-showrunner Joaquim Dos Santos, who is also known for his directing work on "Justice League Unlimited" and "Avatar: The Last Airbender", has been tapped to direct the sequel. Meanwhile, David Callaham, who wrote "The Expendables", "Wonder Woman 1984" as well as writes the upcoming "Zombieland 2", is hired to provide the script.

As for the planned spin-off, the studio is eying Lauren Montgomery, who also worked on "Voltron" and co-directed animated movies "Batman: Year One" and "Superman/Batman: Apocalypse" for DC, as director. Bek Smith, who wrote episodes of CBS' series "Zoo", is tapped to write the script.

Details of the spin-off are not immediately available, but it is said that the studio wants an all-female Spider-Women film that will focus on three generations of web-slinging women. It's likely that Spider-Gwen (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld), who makes her debut in "Spider-Verse", will be featured in the spin-off.

Amy Pascal, who produces "Spider-Verse" as well as all live-action Spider-Man movies, will return as producer for the future projects. Other "Spider-Verse" producers, Phil Lord, Chris Miller, Avi Arad and Christina Steinberg, are also expected to be involved in the sequel and spin-off.

"Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" follows Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore), who is raised by a policeman dad and lives his life as a Brooklyn teenager. Miles then finds out that he has the radioactive spider-powers and ends up being mentored by reluctant Peter Parker, who is voiced by Jack Johnson.

Directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman, the animated movie is scheduled to swing into U.S. theaters on December 14.
