The 'Mission: Impossible' actor and the 'Avatar' director were going to lend their voices for two characters in the animated movie, but the scene was nixed because of this reason.

AceShowbiz - "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse", which recently won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film, could have been different with more celebrity cameos. Speaking with /Film, directors Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman reveal that there were ideas that didn't make the cut into the final film, including planned Tom Cruise and James Cameron's cameos.

"There's a lot of stuff that we took out of the movie for good reasons, but that give you a window into the creative process behind the years that were spent on the movie," Rothman explains. One of those cut scenes would've involved Cruise and Cameron. In the said scene, the "Top Gun: Maverick" actor was supposed to be playing a real person Spider-Man in a movie directed by Cameron.

"So there was a whole period of time where Miles rather than learning about being Spider-Man from a comic book learned it from watching the films," Rothman dishes. "There was a movie version of a movie about Spider-Man in Miles universe about the real person Spider-Man, but it was a James Cameron directed movie with Tom Cruise as Spidey. Yes. Spidey. And it was James Cameron and Spidey and Tom Cruise on the audio."

But the scene was cut because it got too complex and it took so long to explain the concept. Miles eventually learns about Spider-Man from reading one of the web-slinger's comic books.

While Cruise and Cameron didn't get to be parts of "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse", the movie doesn't lack celebrity cameos. Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee appears in a posthumous cameo, while Oscar Isaac is featured in the post-credit scenes as Miguel O'Hara a.k.a. an alternative version of Spider-Man from the Marvel 2099 Imprint. Donald Glover, who once campaigned to play a black Spider-Man, also appears in a background TV screen as Troy Barnes in Spider-Man pajamas.
