"Riverdale" is expanding its universe on The CW. After successfully introducing Archie on a live-action drama series, the network is now working on a companion show that will revolve around Sabrina Spellman the teenage witch.

The project is titled "The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina". According to The Hollywood Reporter, the graphic novel will be adapted into a dark coming-of-age tale that traffics in horror, the occult and witchcraft, naturally.

The hourlong drama is described as in the vein of "Rosemary's Baby" and "The Exorcist". It finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature as a half-witch, half-mortal while fighting the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.

"Riverdale" showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa writes the TV adaptation. He will also executive produce with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Jon Goldwater and Lee Toland Krieger. If the project gets a green light, Krieger is expected to direct the pilot.

"One of the nice things about me being a part of Archie Comics is having access to a library of 4,000 to 5,000 characters," Aguirre-Sacasa said. "Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Josie and the Pussycats ... those are characters who can very easily support their own show. But we [also] have superheroes. So in success, yes, the goal is to expand that way."

Sabrina Spellman was previously played by Melissa Joan Hart on a sitcom which was a part of ABC's TGIF lineup from 1996-2003. Besides getting her own solo show in a remake, the character is expected to appear on the parent show "Riverdale" since Greendale is the young witch's hometown.

"Riverdale" premiered in January 2016 and will return on October 11 this year for a second season. It stars the likes of KJ Apa, Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes and Cole Sprouse. It follows Archie's life in the small town of Riverdale while exploring the darkness hidden behind its seemingly perfect image.
