'Rings' release date is moved from October 28, 2016 to February 3, 2017, giving Universal's 'Ouija: Origin of Evil', which hits U.S. theaters on October 21, a good stake on the Halloween market.

Paramount Pictures has delayed the release of "Rings" for the third time. It was originally set for a November 13, 2015 release before moved to April 1, 2016, and then to October 28. Now the studio moves the horror flick's release date again to February 3, 2017, giving Universal's "Ouija: Origin of Evil", which comes to U.S. theaters on October 21, a good stake on the Halloween market.
"Rings" is directed by F. Javier Gutierrez based on a script penned by Akiva Goldsman, David Loucka and Jacob Aaron Este. Guillermo del Toro serves as executive producer. The third installment of "The Ring" movie franchise stars Johnny Galecki, Matilda Lutz, Alex Roe, Aimee Teegarden, Bonnie Morgan and Vincent D'Onofrio.
Paramount also announces a new release date for "Friday the 13th (2017)". Delayed by nine months, it is moved from January 13, 2017 to October 13, 2017. It's not the first time the studio moves the release date of the film. Originally set for a November 13, 2015 release, it was later moved to May 13, 2016. The studio hasn't given any comment regarding the report.
According to Variety, the delays are coming a day after Paramount's parent company, Viacom, suffered a $115 million loss from an unidentified Paramount movie, presumably "Monster Trucks". Drexel Hamilton analyst Tony Wible told the site that it "implies that Paramount will have lost about $500 million this year despite a favorable box office, home entertainment and licensing environment.
"The studio is gradually losing its major franchises, and it may be difficult to launch new ones in the increasingly competitive film slate," Wible added. "We are lowering our future margin assumptions for the studio."
