In 1967 Los Angeles, a widowed mother named Alice Zander (c=Elizabeth Reaser) runs a small séance business to support her two daughters, Paulina (c=Annalise Basso) and Doris (c=Lulu Wilson). When Alice acquires a Ouija board to add authenticity to her performances, she unwittingly opens a door to genuine supernatural forces that target her youngest daughter. Directed by Mike Flanagan, this prequel to the 2014 horror film shifts from cheap parlor tricks to real terror as the family discovers that the board is a conduit for malevolent spirits with a sinister agenda. As strange occurrences escalate in their home, Paulina becomes increasingly concerned for her sister's safety, while Doris begins exhibiting disturbing behavior that suggests a dark possession is taking hold. The film masterfully blends atmospheric dread with genuine scares, exploring the vulnerability of a family still grieving their father's death against an evil that preys on their deepest sorrows and fears.
