Co-creator Damon Lindelof says the upcoming season 'is about how a family comes back together' and will bring back Patti, who was presumed dead.

AceShowbiz - HBO has set a return date for "The Leftovers". The second season of the drama series will debut Sunday, October 4 at 9 P.M. Ahead of the show's return, series creators Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta talked about what to expect from the next installment at the Television Critics Association press tour on Thursday, July 30.

As revealed in the teaser, season 2 will be set in a different city, which is Jarden, a small town in eastern Texas, where none of its residents disappeared during the Departure. Some of the characters will relocate there, including Kevin Garvey (Justin Theroux), his new lover Nora Durst (Carrie Coon), his daughter Jill (Margaret Qualley), and the town reverend Matt Jamison (Christopher Eccleston).

Despite the new setting and a lot of new characters, Lindelof emphazised, "This season is not a reboot," but "it's the next chapter." He also said about the theme of season 2, "Season one was about how a family fell apart, and season two is about how a family comes back together."

He went on explaining, "We wanted the second season to have a narrative engine. We're not subbing out plot for character development and emotion. ... What would this place be like, this town in Texas? What would happen if there was a departure? In the normal world, if someone goes missing, we say they're a victim of foul play or they ran away. But in this world, there's a third possibility. Season 2 explores that idea of sudden loss."

Lindelof also dropped a major surprise as he revealed that Patti Levin (Ann Dowd), the leader of the local chapter of the Guilty Remnant, isn't dead. "Suffice to say, she's a huge problem that needs to be solved," he teased, "We don't want to use her as a Shakespearean ghost, which is to say she's someone there just to comment on the action. She's in the show, but we don't really want to talk too specifically about how she manifests."

The new faces in the second season include the Garvey family's neighbors, the Murphys, played by Kevin Carroll, Regina King, Jasmin Savoy Brown and Jovan Adepo. They have been untouched from any departures in Texas.

Responding to criticisms of the bleak tone of season 1, Lindelof said, "The first season of the show we make no apologies for. We wanted to ground the world. To some, that maybe have felt bleak and depressing - but to us, it felt honest."
