The stage production based on Bill Murray's 1993 movie will debut on the Great White Way in January before a March opening.

AceShowbiz - "Groundhog Day" musical gets Broadway debut. Based on Columbia Pictures' 1993 movie starring Bill Murray as a weatherman who is forced to repeat the same day over and over again, it will premiere on January 23, 2017 before officially opening on March 9.

The play is created by the creative team behind "Matilda" such as Tim Minchin (score), Matthew Warchus (direction), Peter Darling (choreography), and Rob Howell (sets). The book is written by Danny Rubin, who wrote the movie's script with Harold Ramis. Scott Rudin ("The Book of Mormon") serves as a producer along with Columbia Live Stage.

"Danny, Tim and I have been working on the show for three years in an informal way," Warchus told New York Post. "We didn't even have the rights from Sony. By the time we had a first draft and seven songs, we decided we'd better get them."

"The music in a musical reflects the emotional state of the characters," Minchin explained. "The Phil Connors who wakes up on day two is not the same Phil Connors who woke up on day one. Once I realized that, it set me free to write a variety of songs."

The cast and the theater are yet to be announced.
