She faced financial problems when she was 18 and found music as the only way to pay her rent.

She then decided to use Halsey as her stage name because it was an anagram of her real name Ashley and the name of a street in Brooklyn where she spent her time mostly as a teenager. She initially planned to major in fine arts in college, but chose creative writing instead because of money issue.

Halsey kicked off her solo career by posting cover songs on YouTube. In 2014, she recorded a song called "Ghost" and uploaded it on SoundCloud. The song led her to be noticed by Astralwerks record label, which she eventually signed a record deal with. Halsey released her debut EP "Room 93" in October 2014.

In 2015, Halsey became the most talked about performer at South by Southwest (SXSW) festival on Twitter. Thanks to her rising fame, she was enlisted to be a supporting act on Imagine Dragons' North American leg of their "Smoke + Mirrors Tour" between June and August 2015.

Halsey released her debut studio album "Badlands" on August 28, 2015 and described it as "angry female record." The LP debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and sold more than 97,000 copies in its first week. The set was preceded by two singles titled "Ghost" and "New Americana". Other tracks included "Roman Holiday" that was featured in the second season of TV series "Younger" and "I Walk the Line", which was featured in the teaser trailer of "Power Rangers".

In 2016, Halsey assisted EDM duo The Chainsmokers on the group's single titled "Closer" which topped Billboard Hot 100 chart. In the following year, she announced that her second studio album, "Hopeless Fountain Kingdom", would hit the shelves on June 2. She released the album's lead single "Now or Never" along with its accompanying music video on April 4, 2017. The second single, "Eyes Closed", was released on May 4. Meanwhile, the third song, "Strangers" featuring Lauren Jauregui, was released on May 25.

The set will feature sixteen tracks, including three collaborative songs. Besides "Strangers", the other two collaborations are "Lie" featuring Quavo and "Hopeless" featuring Cashmere Cat. The trek would kick off in Uncasville, Connecticut on September 29 and run through November 22 in Cleveland, Ohio.

She was listed as one of the performers at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards and took the stage to perform "Now or Never". She also took the stage to receive three awards for her collaboration with The Chainsmokers, "Closer". Halsey scored her first No. 1 album on Billboard 200 when "Hopeless Fountain Kingdom" debuted atop the chart with 106,000 album units. This feat made her the first female act in 2017 to have her album arrive atop the chart. The effort debuted at No. 2 on Australia's ARIA Album chart and launched at No. 12 on U.K. Albums chart.

Her personal life was put in the spotlight after she was rumored to be dating G-Eazy. They first sparked romance rumors after kissing onstage at the final show of his "Blue Nile Dive" tour before making their relationship Instagram official in September. The two also released a collaborative track, "Him & I" off his "The Beautiful & Damned", on December 7.

She released the third single off her sophomore album, "Sorry", along with its music video on February 2, 2018. Following the release of the single, it was announced in April that she would make her movie debut in "A Star Is Born", which was directed by Bradley Cooper. In addition, the singer will star in her own biopic that is being developed by Sony Pictures.

Also in the same month, Halsey revealed during her appearance on "The Doctors" that she had suffered miscarriage while on tour due to endometriosis. As a result of that, she freeze her eggs in order to protect her fertility.

After a year of dating, Halsey confirmed on Instagram Stories on July 3 that she and Eazy are no longer dating. She also deleted many of her photos with the rapper from her social media accounts. Following the split, Halsey was rumored to be reuniting with her ex Machine Gun Kelly after photos of them hanging out together surfaced online. However, she took to Twitter to shut down the rumors.

Halsey later rekindled her romance with Eazy after the two kissed onstage while performing their duet "Him & I" at her New Jersey concert in September. They confirmed their reunion with an Instagram picture in the same month. In October, Halsey released a standalone single entitled "Without Me" which marked her first solo single since "Bad at Love" in 2017. She stated that the song was very personal to her, and as a result decided to release the song under her legal name, Ashley, instead of her stage name.

Her personal life was once again brought into the spotlight in late October after it was revealed that she and Eazy broke up for the second time. Fortunately for her, it didn't affect her music career as "Without Me" was well received by people. The song debuted at No. 18 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart before jumping to No. 9 following the release of its music video. It became her first top ten single since "Bad at Love" reached No. 5 in January 2018.

Promoting the single, Halsey performed "Without Me" at several shows including the 2018 MTV Europe Music Awards, the 2018 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show and "The Voice". However, her performance on the singing-competition show received backlash due to her dancing "sensually" with another woman. Halsey clapped back at the critics in December, calling them "homophobic."

"Without Me" popularity continued to rise, to the point where it finally topped Billboard's Hot 100 chart in January 2019. It became her first No. 1 single as a lead artist on the chart and her second overall after her collaboration with The Chainsmokers, "Closer", did the same in 2016. Celebrating the milestone, Halsey released a remix of the song on January 8, enlisting Juice WRLD.
