Emerging from the vibrant Denver music scene, Flobots carved a unique niche in alternative rock and hip-hop with their politically charged lyrics and unconventional instrumentation, achieving mainstream recognition in the late 2000s. The experimental rap-rock band, formed in 2005 by frontman and lyricist Jamie Laurie, found national success with their thought-provoking single "Handlebars," a track that became an unlikely modern rock radio hit and defined their major label debut. Their sound, blending rap verses with rock dynamics and the distinctive textures of viola and trumpet, set them apart as socially conscious storytellers in a pop-dominated landscape.

The origins of Flobots trace back to 2000 with Jamie Laurie's earlier musical projects, but the band solidified its classic lineup five years later. This lineup featured Laurie (also known as Jonny 5) and Brer Rabbit on vocals, backed by musicians Mackenzie Roberts on viola, Joe Ferrone on trumpet, Jesse Walker on bass, and Kenny Ortiz on drums. They built a strong local following in Colorado, self-releasing the album "Fight with Tools" in 2007. The independent success of that album, driven by the viral spread of "Handlebars," led to a major label re-release in 2008 on Universal Republic Records, propelling the single into the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 and to the top of the Modern Rock chart.

Their major label debut, "Fight with Tools," was a concept album critiquing war, consumerism, and social apathy, establishing Flobots as activists as much as musicians. They promoted voter registration and community organizing on tour, aligning their art with their message. The band followed up with "Survival Story" in 2010, which included the single "White Flag Warrior," featuring Tim McIlrath of Rise Against. After parting ways with their label, Flobots returned to their independent roots, fostering direct engagement with their fanbase. They released "The Circle in the Square" in 2012 and the "Noenemies" EP in 2017, the latter accompanied by a?? book and a focus on grassroots activism.

Throughout their career, Flobots maintained a commitment to their Denver community, founding the nonprofit organization Fight with Tools to support youth music programs and social justice initiatives. While their period of chart dominance was concentrated around 2008, the band continued to record, tour, and use their platform to advocate for political and social change, solidifying their legacy as a group that seamlessly merged potent musical craftsmanship with unwavering civic engagement.
