Rise Against is an influential American punk rock band that originated in Chicago, Illinois, in 1999. Renowned for their energetic sound and socially conscious lyrics, they have made significant contributions to the punk genre over the years. The current lineup includes vocalist and rhythm guitarist Tim McIlrath, lead guitarist Zach Blair, bassist Joe Principe, and drummer Brandon Barnes. With a commitment to melody, aggressive playstyle, and rapid tempos, the band has captured a dedicated fanbase while addressing various pressing issues through their music.

The band's journey began under the name Transistor Revolt, and they initially signed with the independent label Fat Wreck Chords, where they released their first two albums, The Unraveling in 2001 and Revolutions per Minute in 2003. These projects garnered underground success, allowing them to build a solid fanbase within the punk community. In 2003, Rise Against transitioned to a major label, DreamWorks, which later merged with Geffen Records. Their major label debut, Siren Song of the Counter Culture, released in 2004, marked a pivotal moment in their career, propelled by the popularity of singles like "Give It All" and "Swing Life Away."

Rise Against achieved further commercial success with their subsequent album, The Sufferer & the Witness, which peaked at number ten on the Billboard 200 in the United States and marked their first charting album outside North America. The band's evolution continued with the release of Appeal to Reason in 2008, which showcased a more polished and radio-friendly sound. The album's single "Savior" broke records for its impressive longevity on the Hot Rock Songs and Alternative Songs charts, further solidifying the band's presence in mainstream music.

Their popularity surged with the release of Endgame in 2011, which peaked at number two on the Billboard 200, also achieving impressive chart positions around the world. The subsequent albums, The Black Market in 2014 and Wolves in 2017, continued this trend of commercial success, each reaching the top ten on the Billboard 200. However, their ninth studio album, Nowhere Generation, released in 2021, did not replicate the same level of commercial achievement. Looking toward the future, the band announced their tenth album, Ricochet, set to be released on August 15, 2025.

Beyond their musical achievements, Rise Against is known for their advocacy of various social issues, including animal rights, humanitarianism, and environmentalism. The band members are active supporters of organizations such as Amnesty International and the It Gets Better Project, and they promote a straight edge lifestyle, with most members being vegans and PETA supporters. Through their music and activism, Rise Against continues to resonate with fans and inspire change, solidifying their place in the pantheon of punk rock history.
