Burna Boy
Burna Boy, born Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu on July 2, 1991, in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, is a Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, and record producer who has become a global ambassador for Afrobeats. Fusing reggae, dancehall, hip-hop, and Afrobeat, he has crafted a distinct sonic identity that celebrates his African heritage while achieving unprecedented international success. His journey from local acclaim to becoming the first African artist to have two albums surpass one billion streams on Spotify marks him as a defining voice of his generation.
Raised in Port Harcourt and later Lagos, Burna Boy was immersed in music from a young age; his grandfather Benson Idonije once managed the legendary Fela Kuti, and his mother, Bose Ogulu, would later become his manager. He began making music on FruityLoops software and, after a stint studying Media Technology in England, returned to Nigeria to pursue music professionally. His career breakthrough arrived in 2012 with the release of "Like to Party," a hit single that led to his debut studio album, L.I.F.E, in 2013, establishing his signature sound.
His international profile expanded significantly after signing with Atlantic Records in 2017. The 2018 project Outside, his major-label debut, served as a critical introduction to global audiences. However, it was his 2019 album, African Giant, that cemented his status, earning a Grammy nomination for Best World Music Album and winning Album of the Year at the All Africa Music Awards. He followed this with 2020's Twice as Tall, which won the Grammy Award for Best Global Music Album, making him a definitive Grammy winner. His accolades grew to include multiple BET Awards for Best International Act.
Burna Boy's commercial and critical ascent continued with his sixth studio album, 2022's Love, Damini, which became the highest-debuting Nigerian album on the Billboard 200 chart and set records across European markets. The album's global hit "Last Last" sampled a classic by Toni Braxton and became an anthem. In 2023, he released his seventh studio album, I Told Them..., which further showcased his artistic evolution. His achievements have been recognized with national honors, including being made a Member of the Order of the Federal Republic by the Nigerian government. As a cultural force, Burna Boy continues to headline major festivals worldwide and collaborate with international stars like Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber, tirelessly promoting the richness and power of African music on the world stage.
