After Walden cynically swears off relationships, he meets an actress named Whitney and decides to hire her to pose as his girlfriend or "employ-friend", explaining that he just wants female companionship without the complicated sex part. Walden ends up falling for Whitney, but he can't figure out whether or not she feels the same way since he is paying her. He is crestfallen to discover she is a lesbian with a girlfriend and was just acting the whole time, but the experience makes him realize that he wants to be in a real relationship again. Jake goes AWOL from the army to meet with Missy, but she breaks his heart again when she can't seem to feel the fireworks between them.
