After a sports doctor is pushed in front of a city bus, Laura (Debra Messing) and the team learn that he, his wife and stepson were planning a move to Europe. Suspicion falls to the stepson's father, Kurt (Greg Grunberg), who did not want his son moving away. Part of a "men's rights" group, Kurt has a lot of anger but also an airtight alibi. When the wife of another men's rights group member is killed the next day, Laura and the team realize the two murders have to be related. The second suspect has an alibi as well, which leads Laura to suspect they made a "Strangers on a Train"-style bargain and traded murders. She's half right: the husband took credit for killing the sports doctor, so Kurt would kill his wife.
Still lacking a prime suspect for the doctor's murder, Laura goes home, where her dad (Robert Klein), who is staying over for a few days, says how clear it is that Laura still loves Jake (Josh Lucas). He encourages Laura to choose happiness and not waste these years. Her dad regrets all the time he missed with her and says now he'd kill anyone who came between him and his family.
This comment sparks a connection for Laura. She knows who the killer is - the other family member who was being left behind: the child's grandmother. Sure enough, when they bring the grandmother in for questioning, her cane has tar on it matching the stain on the victim's back.
Throughout the case, Billy (Laz Alonso) drops hints to Meredith (Janina Gavankar) about moving in together. She ignores these hints until he asks her outright. Laura, who overhears when Meredith agrees to move in, asks what made her say yes. Meredith's answer - that it's the little things - clearly makes Laura think of Jake, who is cooking for their boys when she arrives home. Laura has a date with Tony, and as she leaves, her dad once again advises her to let herself be happy. Laura meets Tony, but instead of keeping their date, she breaks up with him, admitting she still loves Jake.
