Laura Diamond (Debra Messing) gets an unexpected call from former boss and mentor Captain Dan Hauser (Enrico Colantoni), whom she jailed for not only threatening to kill her but killing his wife's lover as well. Speaking in code about the murderer who got away from them - fellow inmate Thomas Mullens - Hauser gives Laura enough intel to find Mullens' missing murder victims. But when Hauser and Mullens break out of prison, Santiani (Callie Thorne) benches Laura for impropriety. Of course, Laura can't stay off the case for long...
The team's investigation comes to a head when Laura follows Hauser's clues to locate the escapees. With the help of Billy Soto (Laz Alonso), Meredith Bose (Janina Gavankar) and Jake (Josh Lucas), Laura takes down Mullens and brings Hauser back to prison. After Hauser confesses that it's all been about redeeming himself in Laura's eyes, the pair shares an emotional goodbye.
Jake continues to press Laura to forgive him for screwing up their marriage. While Laura is initially cold as ice, Hauser's apology prompts her to reconsider. No matter what, Jake is demonstrating that he's there for her. All is not forgiven, but it's a start.
