It's Halloween night, and at Mikayla's urging, Debbie, Nathan, and Ray take Mikayla trick or treating at the house of an old woman that everyone in the neighborhood believes to be a witch. While they are all there, Mikayla sees a parrot she likes, but Nathan and Debbie are shocked to learn that it is Debbie's childhood pet parrot that she believed flew away when she was kid after Nathan left a window open. More importantly, the old lady tells them that Carol gave her the bird. Nate and Debbie can't believe Carol would have done such a thing, and Nate is particularly upset because Carol made him believe all these years that he was the reason the parrot flew away. Debbie and Nate love the fact that they have caught Carol in a lie and confront her but she tells them she did it for the good of the whole family. However, to make things up to them, she gets the parrot back for Debbie. Debbie and Nate struggle to take care of the parrot and ultimately have to admit to Carol that she was right to have gotten rid of it years ago. They also admit that the family needs her to do things to save the family from itself at times.
