Max is has been in a healthy relationship with Grant (guest star James Wolk) for two full weeks. His friends are amazed. Penny also claims to have a solid union with her new guy, Sean. He's a pharmacist. No one really cares. They're all too interested in Grant. Max wants his friends to be nice to his boyfriend. That'll be easy since they all love the guy.
Dave takes exception to the notion that Grant could become the cool guy in their group. They already have a cool guy in him. Dave wears sunglasses inside and tries to act David Caruso-cool (just like he tried to do six years ago) to prove this theory.
The ladies summon Grant to fix a garbage disposal so they can sneak a peek at him with his shirt off. Yes, everyone loves him. Penny's new pharmacist fellow isn't making as much of an impact with Brad and Jane who are looking for good couples friends. They'd prefer to hang with people who aren't boring and who don't end up wanting to have sex with them. It's a tall order.
Penny's offer to fill the "couples friend" role with Sean is met with a lukewarm response from Brad and Jane. In fact, they cancel plans in order to "couples cheat" with Max and Grant. Speaking of Max, he worries that Grant is too perfect. He needs to find a flaw.
Max wants to dump Grant part of a misguided preemptive strike before he gets dumped. A quiet dinner for two quickly turns into a party of eight when all of his friends and Sean the pharmacist show up. Dave, by the way, arrives via a motorcycle he can't quite handle. It isn't very cool.
There's a lively conversation during dinner as everyone vies for quality time with Grant. Well, everyone but Dave. The others are so over-the-top with their gushing that Grant eventually loses it. He rants that he was only trying to impress them so he'd be liked. This is great news for Max, who now knows Grant is needy. His boyfriend is not perfect and that makes him perfect for Max.
