Fry accidentally stands Leela up for dinner on her birthday and promises to make it up to her the next evening. Before he can leave to meet her for their date at a restaurant in a cavern, Farnsworth forces him and Bender to test a newly invented time machine that can only travel into the future. They intend to travel forward in time by one minute, so Fry decides to leave a video recording on a birthday card apologizing to Leela for being late again. Unfortunately, Farnsworth accidentally sets the machine to send them into the year 10,000, and the card is lost in the time vortex outside. Fry, Bender, and Farnsworth continue traveling through time until a backwards time machine is invented. Meanwhile, Leela assumes Fry went to a strip club which is reported to have exploded in an accident, leading everyone to believe Fry is dead. Leela remains angry with Fry for standing her up again until she reads his card, which reappears in the year 3050, allowing her to see he wasn't at fault. She goes back to the cavern restaurant and writes a message for Fry in stalagmites reading that the short time they spent together was the best time of her life. Fry finds this message once he reaches the year one billion, when all life on Earth is extinct, leaving the three no hope of finding another time machine. They decide to watch the end of the universe together, which leads to a second Big Bang after which all time repeats itself. This allows Fry to return to the point in time where he first left in the time machine with the others and make it to his date with Leela on time.
