During the ceremony, Ye personally revealed the new street sign dedicated to his mother, a moment captured on video where he proudly lifted the sign. Although he did not address the media, his presence was a significant tribute to Dr. West’s legacy. The event was also attended by Chicago rapper Rhymefest, Alderman Greg Mitchell of the 7th Ward, and numerous community leaders who joined in celebrating Dr. West’s impact on the city.

Dr. Donda West was a respected educator who taught at Chicago State University. She chaired the English Department and founded the Gwendolyn Brooks Center for Black Literature and Creative Writing. Her contributions to education and the arts left a lasting mark on Chicago’s academic community. Dr. West passed away in November 2007 at the age of 58 due to coronary artery disease and complications following plastic surgery.

Throughout his career, Ye has paid tribute to his mother through his music. In 2015, he released the emotional ballad "Only One," inspired by a conversation with Paul McCartney about a song McCartney wrote. The track was conceived as a heartfelt message from Dr. West to her son. Earlier, in 2005, he honored her with the song "Hey Mama" on his album Late Registration. He also performed "Hey Mama" at the 2008 Grammy Awards as a touching homage.
