AceShowbiz - Snoop Dogg and his company are intensifying their legal efforts to avoid liability in the wrongful death lawsuit stemming from the fatal stabbing of rapper Drakeo the Ruler at a 2021 Los Angeles festival.
Recently, Snoop Dogg's company, SDLLC, filed for nearly $5,300 in sanctions against associates of Drakeo the Ruler, citing disputes during the discovery phase of the case. This development highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding the tragic event that occurred backstage at the Once Upon A Time in LA festival in December 2021.
The lawsuit was originally filed in February 2022 by Drakeo's mother, Darrylene Corniel, and his young son, accusing the festival organizers of failing to provide sufficient security, which allegedly contributed to the fatal stabbing.
In court documents, SDLLC argues that their connection to the festival was limited solely to a payment of $500,000 for a one-hour performance by Snoop Dogg. The company insists it had no role in managing the event, including security, venue oversight, or operational decisions. Their attorneys are pushing for a summary judgment to remove SDLLC entirely from the lawsuit prior to trial.
Other parties involved in the lawsuit include Live Nation, C3 Presents, and various promoters. Another defendant, Enumer8, has already proposed a $20,000 settlement, claiming that proving liability against them would be difficult.
Drakeo the Ruler, born Darrell Caldwell, was recognized as a pioneering voice in West Coast hip-hop. Before his untimely death at 28, he had released 10 mixtapes and his debut album, I Am Mr. Mosely, in 2017. The Los Angeles Times described him as "the most original West Coast stylist in decades," applauding his distinctive flow and poetic lyricism.
Notably, Drakeo recorded an entire mixtape titled Thank You For Using GTL while incarcerated at Men's Central Jail, awaiting trial on a 2016 murder charge. He was eventually acquitted of that charge but later pled to conspiracy charges and was released in November 2020.
The wrongful death trial is scheduled to begin in September 2026. As of July 2, 2026, the murder of Drakeo the Ruler remains unsolved, with no arrests made, leaving his family still seeking justice and answers years after the tragedy.
