AceShowbiz - Remain is shaping up to be a milestone in the career of filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan. Speaking at Warner Bros. Discovery’s upfront event in New York, Shyamalan revealed that this upcoming film has received the highest audience test scores he has ever experienced.
Remain is a romantic thriller featuring Jake Gyllenhaal, Phoebe Dynevor, and Julie Hagerty. The film is co-created with bestselling author Nicholas Sparks and centers on an architect recovering from depression who relocates to Cape Cod. There, he meets a mysterious woman and becomes entangled in a suspenseful and supernatural story. This unique collaboration also produced a bestselling novel released last year, with the film adaptation set to premiere on February 5, 2027.
Shyamalan described the project’s origins, saying, “My new movie began with a conversation, an unexpected one, with a celebrated author, Nicholas Sparks. He sold more than 130 million books worldwide and wrote one of the most iconic love stories ever, The Notebook. Romance is his territory. Mine's a little different. I'm drawn to suspense, to twists and tension and stories that leave you just a little unsettled long after they are over. That feels like home to me.”
The director elaborated on their creative process: “We started from nothing, just a couple of questions: What scares you? What moves you? What stays with you? We challenged each other. We traded ideas and slowly wove two very different perspectives into a single, thrilling, supernatural love story. In the end, we get to tell it our own way. Mine through film, Nicholas through his novel.”
Unlike typical adaptations, Remain exists as two distinct works—a novel and a film—each told independently by the collaborators. The story follows Tate Gordon, a reclusive architect who moves to a quaint coastal town to complete a project. His encounter with a captivating young woman pulls him out of isolation and into a dangerous mystery enveloping the community.
Shyamalan also highlighted the film’s status during post-production: “Just between us, it’s my highest-testing movie of my career. We're now in post-production, finding every detail. Honestly, my hope is that when you experience Remain, you feel both sides of it at once—full of love and that quiet, lingering unease that doesn't let you go.”
With a career that includes 16 directed films and numerous writing and producing credits, Shyamalan is known for classics like The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. The anticipation now builds to see if Remain will resonate even more strongly with audiences.
Recently, Shyamalan found success with the 2024 thriller Trap, which stars Josh Hartnett as a serial killer who unknowingly attends a concert under police surveillance after a tip-off. This previous work sets a tense tone leading into the highly anticipated release of Remain.
The film’s release date and the unique dual storytelling approach position Remain as a notable entry in both Shyamalan’s filmography and Nicholas Sparks’s literary universe, blending suspense and romance in an unprecedented way.
