AceShowbiz - Ashes (original title Ceniza en la Boca) is a poignant film directed and co-written by Diego Luna, who also collaborated with Abia Castillo and Diego Rabasa on the screenplay. The movie follows the journey of Lucila, a young girl who leaves Mexico with her younger brother to reunite with their mother in Madrid, hoping for a better life. However, upon arrival, Lucila confronts a harsh and suffocating reality that is far more challenging than she expected. Despite this, she resolves to make the most of her fragile new existence.
During a special screening panel featuring Diego Luna, Anna Díaz, and Adriana Paz, Luna shared deeply personal insights into the film's themes. He revealed that losing his mother at the age of two profoundly shaped his perspective on absence and family. "I lost my mother when I was two, so I had to explain my whole life why I had to live with an absence that apparently was crucial for others, you know?" he explained.
Luna emphasized that his personal experience influenced how he approached the subject of migration in Ashes. He pointed out that often, stories about migration focus on the reasons people leave, but rarely address the ongoing emotional struggles migrants face after relocating. "When we talk about people migrating, we tend to miss the most important part - what happens when they migrate, what have they gone through, but not in terms of what makes you escape. How does that affect your life? The simple things of your relation with your brother, your mother, your hometown, your friends. What does that mean to lose everything?"
The film is being presented by sales agent Luxbox and is part of a special screenings section that highlights powerful cinematic narratives. Diego Luna's commitment to telling stories that explore migration with emotional depth resonates through Ashes, inviting audiences to reflect on the complex realities faced by those who leave their homes behind.
